I wrote this already but Kinja ate it. Anyway, I’ve been driving my wife’s car the past two days to work (yesterday because it made me money to do so and today because I was too lazy the change the car seats back over...again) and here are my thoughts.
Things I like:
all the power I need
48 mpg
6 speed manual
quite and smooth
good stereo
heated seats (man I love heated seats)
great steering - lots of feedback and feel and perfectly weighted
Things I don’t like:
HORRIBLE brakes - they work great...but there is no linearity of feel in the brakes. its either on or off it seems, especially at low speeds. I actually locked the fronts briefly this morning just slowing down for stop and go traffic. They work great in a panic situation it turns out though (saved my butt a few months ago)
Turbo lag (this may be an elevation thing) - Want to cover that gap in front of you left by the car that just turned left...oh, too late... even though you’ve had your foot hard down since you started reading this.
Invisible to cars - seriously, I get nearly merged into ALOT
less overall lateral grip than my cruiser...weird.
Throttle tip in is very binary and sometimes jerky.
Its a VW. Stuff has gone wrong and feels like it could again.

Unrelated, I saw a new discovery sport in the parking garage this morning and a few thoughts immediately struck me:
HOLY CRAP they are smaller than I thought. like RAV4/CRV small. I know Toyota put a 3rd row in the last gen Rav4, but I can’t imagine what the back seats in this thing are like.
Who would mistake this for the reinvention of the Discovery? This is no discovery (A new discovery is coming)
Poor sucker, bought with the Ford engine instead of the new ingenium engines that are coming.

If i recall correctly, the JSW shares brakes with the GTI/GLI. Could explain the touchiness.
I don’t typically notice the turbo lag (‘10 jetta tdi w/ same cjaa engine lump and DSG) unless i’m hammering it down from low rolling speed.
As for vw stuff going wrong: i had the odd moment yesterday when going from one turn signal to the other (think quick right then immediate left) and the left blinker just didn’t blink what so ever. Odd vw can be odd.

I don’t like the discovery sports. They are just a continuation of the freelander and the LR2. You’re right about the size, they are tiny.
48mpg? Is that the diesel? A coworker of mine has a new GTI, and he's no where near that. Granted his is the performance version.

Yeah, its the TDI. Its stupid easy to get good highway mileage of it. I wasn’t on any eco run and I was in the 50’s most of the time.

Very impressive. I’ve been looking at a DD since my cruiser only gets about 16mpg during my commute.

Regarding the disco sport...meh. I support anyone who buys something like this and then uses it in a way that the marketing departments knows you will never likely do. I mean, hats off to those Jeep Patriot FDII drivers with lift kits and big tires that are out there killing it on the weekends.

16?! you lucky bastard. I get 12-13. Anyways, I wouldn’t recommend a TDI, Just get a good NA gas engine wagon...too many issues now and down the road.

I'll give you that. My MIL just got a Cherokee Trailhawk and I'm trying to get to take it into the woods with me.

Yeah, that’s more than my budget for a fun DD anyways. I've actually been talking to a guy about a 85 BMW 325e for $2,500. It gets about 36mpg and would still be fun to drive.

The KL is actually decent offroad, I was more than impressed with it. That being said...body damage is going to be the main issue.
This wasn’t me, but I was there.

Yeah, I just want to see what it will do on some mild local trails. Maybe try out that locker in some mud.

The nice thing about the KL is that the traction control off button is front and center...and actually works. The crawl control feature (or whatever jeep calls it) works pretty well too.

Nice. I guess to make up for the lack of articulation and lift options, they offset it with good traction options
